Why is Branding Important to a business?

Most people wonder, “Why is branding important to a business’s success?” Some even believe if they can have a website, do some social media marketing, put in time and effort, things would work. This is how one can establish a solid foundation for their successful business. Sorry to burst the bubble. This is not how you unfold, elevate, or redefine your success!

To validate the importance of branding, whether it is personal branding or business, we must clarify the difference between Brand, Brand Development, Branding, and Marketing. People often struggle with knowing the difference between these terms. Businesses or most professionals often use these four terms interchangeably, and this is a common mistake.

In this blog, I will explain the difference between these 4 terms giving you further insights, information, and inspiration to lean on!

What is the difference between Brand, Brand Development, Branding, and Marketing?

Image and perception are the only two things that create value. Without an image, there is no perception. The power of visual branding is beyond expression.

“Start with your why” is an excellent first step, but you need a branding expert to take you to the next few stages and get you a solid foundation for your business. To answer the question, why is branding important for a business, let’s begin with understanding what is a Brand. Then I will define what Brand Development, Branding, and Marketing is.

What is a Brand?

Your Brand is not your logo, company name, colors, program name, or even the book. Your Brand is the outcome of actions, experiences, and memories that you create with your client. It is a promise. A memorable experience that you plan to deliver to your client. Consistency is the key here.

Every time someone interacts with you, your product, service, or company, they are making an impression of you. Your Brand then is — what someone says about you behind your back. Your Brand is how someone feels after you leave the room. Your Brand is what people think of you and your company every time they see you. A brand is your credibility or lack thereof. It is your value, your quality, or lack thereof. Your Brand can deliver and create results, or not. You get the point, right?!

Your Brand develops over time, and you don’t have much control over it. It’s what people talk about you when you’re not in the room. So how do you manage that? It’s the perception. You have to manage the perception, which is possible with Branding!

What is Branding?

Branding is the act of creating, defining, redefining, and even managing the perception of your Visual and Verbal Brand. It’s the creative process of positioning you, your company, your product, or your book in the market to develop its unique place or niche in front of your intended target audience. Research says that 65% of the population on the planet are visual learners, and an image speaks 60,000 times louder than text. Plus, our brain processes information in the form of shapes first, then color, and finally text. Therefore your book, web site, membership site, sales pages, brochure, social media presence, etc. should be visually and verbally appealing to your intended target audience. It should effectively manage the perception of unfolding, elevating, and redefining your Brand. 

Most often, professionals can do verbal branding only. They cannot cohesively design and build visual branding because they do not have the knowledge, training, skills, and experience to do so. Therefore, they resort to using “templates” or what I call cookie-cutter designs for clients or referring to whatever is out there thinking that one-design fits all will work. Unfortunately, it does not.

Some professionals are visual branding experts only, and they cannot write, craft, or create verbal branding for their clients. They cannot coach and inspire the client on how to generate their content. The client is then left to write on their own. Some work with content writing experts who may or may not have design knowledge, the entire picture or vision of where the client needs to go. Do you see the disconnect here? Being split between various professionals and listening to different approaches and not being sure which one should be done first? In the end, the client ends up spending more money, does not get a cohesive look and feel, and their business suffers.

What is Marketing?

People often think that branding and marketing are the same things, but they are not. Think of branding as a pull strategy. When done right, branding pulls the right audience to you, whereas marketing is the push strategy.

Marketing takes your branded message, product, or service, and pushes it out to the audience for more awareness and broader impact. Advertising, public relations, content writing like blogging, creating sales funnels, email automations, strategic social media presence, and posting, etc. are examples of different methods of marketing.

What is the difference between Brand Development and Branding?

Often people focus on marketing without first focusing on the heart and soul, which is branding. If the heart of this body is not there, which is branding, then the body, which is marketing, is not going to perform at its optimum levels. There are four reasons why is branding important to a business and critical for executives, entrepreneurs, coaches, consultants, speakers, all kinds of creative and focused professionals.

1. Branding allows you to attract the right audience and helps you save some time and money.
2. Branding allows you to build your tribe. You cannot create authentic branding without taking a deeper dive and having a holistic approach to your life experiences.
3. Branding adds credibility and increases the impact of your story and message through its visual power.
4. Branding creates a solid foundation for your business, growth, and expansion. It strengthens your story and message both verbally and visually.

How Do I Know if My Branding is Done Right?

There are 5 critical signs to look for when deciding if your branding is done right and working for you. They are:

1. Does your brand stand out in the crowd? Is it selling? If not, your Branding is off.

2. Is your audience mesmerized by your Brand? Is it attracting your ideal clients?

3. Do you have a speaking platform through your Brand? When the business is born and has the right branding, it cannot be hidden anymore. It orchestrates opportunities for you to talk and share its message. Whether that is in small group setups, one-on-one premium discussion opportunities, or large group settings.

4. Your story is compelling. You often hear from others that they are fascinated by what you are doing! The complements are unsolicited. 

5. Last, you have developed your Brand, done your Branding. You have successfully marketed it, but your audience doesn’t hear your message. Often this is because the design language does not match your Soul, Money, and Destiny codes. The energy is off and does not have the energetic markers that make your branding unique.

What Can I Do To Create a Successful Brand?

The first thing I suggest when it comes to creating or recreating their Brand is NOT to listen to all marketing trends. Do not listen to what other people, aka, non-professionals in the field of design and branding, are saying. And sometimes this includes your family as well.

In today’s world, we are bombarded with visual stimulation and auditory suggestions from our outer environment, and we rarely pause to take a breath. We are neither trained nor encouraged to listen to our intuition. Albert Einstein once said, “The intuitive mind is a sacred gift, and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.”
